Labiaplasty (also known as labial reduction) is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the vaginal lips, or vulva, by removing the excess tissue from the labia majora and/or labia minora. More frequently, it is the labia minora that needs to be altered. While many of our female patients require Labiaplasty to help with discomfort, function, or aesthetic reasons, many recent mothers will add this procedure to their “Mommy Makeover” to correct any changes that have occurred from childbirth.

If you agree with him, the next step is to schedule your surgical date with our Patient Coordinator. Once the date is set, you will also receive a set of directions to follow before coming in that will help lead to a more successful surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Labiaplasty

Dr. Heidari performs labiaplasty under local anesthesia and mild sedation. Once you are under sedation, the excess tissue is removed and the labial contouring is performed to recreate a more cosmetically pleasing appearance. He can achieve this with either the Trim procedure or the Wedge procedure.

During a trim procedure, Dr. Heidari will remove the excess tissue is removed from the outer edge of one or both sides of your labia minora so that it is even or receded from the labia majora edges.

If he uses the wedge procedure, a wedge or “pie-shaped” piece of tissue is taken from the inner areas of one or booths sides of your labia minora. The submucosa is left intact to retain a more natural look. An inner portion of each labium of the labia majora can also be removed if you’re having surgery to remove the labia major.

Surgery Time: The surgery takes about two hours to complete.

You will be able to rest at home following your surgery, but you should have a family member or friend available to drive you home, as you will very likely be sore and slightly feeling the effects of anesthesia. You should take at least a week off of work so that you can heal comfortably. You can expect to experience some mild-to-moderate pain, drainage, and swelling, which can make sitting uncomfortable. Dr. Heidari will prescribe you some temporary pain medication to assist you during the initial stages of recovery, but the application of an ice pack can also alleviate some of the soreness.

You should avoid using tampons and any sexual activity for about four to five weeks (trust us, it’s not worth it). Any scars will fade within a few weeks to a couple of months.
