What to Expect on the Day of Facial Fat Transfer

Dr. Heidari takes fat from other areas of your body such as the abdomen, flanks, waist, thighs, or inner knees. It is then purified and centrifuged into a more concentrated fat. Using a micro-cannula, the fat is placed precisely in predetermined spots to restore lost volume. The procedure takes about two to three hours to complete, and depending on the amount of fat to be injected, is done locally with mild sedation or general anesthesia.

Swelling in the face and bruising in the areas where fat was removed as well as in the face is normal and goes away within seven to fourteen days. Post-operative pain is usually mild and you can return to normal, non-strenuous activity within three to four days. Most of our patients tend to take off a week from work as they heal from the swelling and bruising.

You should keep your head elevated for at least 4 weeks following surgery to minimize swelling. Gentle, light massaging can also help reduce swelling. We do not recommend ice packs or compresses as ice can cause the small blood vessels in your face to temporarily shrink. You may use a warm compress since fat survives off circulation.

Dr. Heidari recommends that you apply makeup after about ten to fourteen days and return to work in about two weeks. He will also give you a list of post-surgical directions to follow to enhance your recovery experience.
