What is Breast Reduction?

Aesthetic Contours

Breast reduction surgery is a common solution for problems caused by breast hypertrophy, or the medical term for large, ptotic (drooping) breasts. This can affect women of all ages and can occur even among those in good physical shape. Breast hypertrophy can cause neck and back pain by stretching nerves and forcing you to stand and walk differently to compensate for the strain that the breasts put on the muscles and bones of your back. A woman’s posture is often negatively affected by breast hypertrophy.

In addition to helping you improve the aforementioned problems, breast reduction can refine the size and shape of your breasts. Following breast reduction, your breasts can potentially be more proportional to the rest of your body and even have an upward lift.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction

Aesthetic Contours

As with many of our surgical breast procedures, before going into surgery, you will be administered general anesthesia. Once you are safely under, your surgery will begin.

Dr. Heidari starts by making a circular incision pattern around your areola. Although this will leave some visible scarring, it is pretty discreet and will always be hidden underneath a swimsuit or bra. The incision is then turned into a keyhole-shaped pattern as a vertical line is made down the breast crease.

Once he is finished making the incisions, your nipple (which is still tethered to its original blood and nerve supply) is repositioned, with the areola being reduced if needed by excising skin. The underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted, and shaped. If a patient has particularly large, pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola make need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast.

When Dr. Heidari is finished, the incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. He will use layered sutures deep within your breast tissue which helps support your new shape. Sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape will be used to close the skin.

Following the surgery, a gauze dressing is placed on the breast and you will wear a surgical bra to help reduce swelling. In some cases, a cannula (a small, thin tube) may be used temporarily under your skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. Dr. Heidari will prescribe antibiotics to avoid infection in addition to pain medication, and he will also provide you with some direction on how to have a healthy and successful recovery.

You will need to continue wearing the support bra for the first month or so after your surgery. Swelling, bruising, and numbness, particularly around the incision, are normal and generally subside in about six weeks. Most patients return to work in ten to fourteen days but must avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for four to six weeks.

While the incision lines are unfortunately permanent, Dr. Heidari does his best to keep them as discreet as possible, and they do fade over time.
