Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Introduction to

We’ve all heard the unfavorable comment “You look tired”. Although there are many instances in which this is exactly the case and all we need is a good night’s sleep, there are many people out there where the solution is not found in just a few more hours of Zzz’s. As people age, the eyelid stretches, muscles weaken, and fat accumulates around the eyes, causing “bags” or excess skin to become prominent. These attributes combined create a tired look and can even make you appear older than you actually are. At Aesthetic Contours by Dr. Ali Heidari, we can provide our patients in the Inland Empire and Upland, CA with the ability to improve their appearance, boost their confidence, and fix any visual problems caused by loose or droopy eyelids.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Aesthetic Contours

Eyelid surgery professionally referred to as Blepharoplasty, is performed to improve the appearance of your eyelids and can be performed on your upper lids, lower lids, or both.

Eyelid surgery is more frequently separated into upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty. During your consultation, Dr. Heidari will examine your eyelids and determine which level is better suited to work on. Some patients may only need the upper or lower eyelids operated on, but in some instances, both are required to achieve the end goal.

Another option is Laser eyelid surgery, which is the latest technique in cosmetic eyelid surgery. Dr. Heidari uses laser skin resurfacing techniques to further tighten the skin around your eyelids safely. This procedure can help to enhance your appearance and self-confidence by opening up your upper face and eliminating the tired look.

Some of the ways our patients can benefit from Eyelid surgery is by treating the following conditions:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural Contours of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision

Who are the Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

The best candidates for getting Eyelid surgery in the Inland Empire or Upland, CA are those who:

  • Do not have any serious eye conditions
  • Nonsmokers.
  • Possess a positive outlook and realistic goals
  • Overall healthy individuals with no medical conditions that can impair healing

Sagging eyelid skin is the primary cause of making an individual appear tired, sad, or older. Upper Eyelid Surgery helps fix eyes that appear plump or droopy which is caused by excess skin and fat by rejuvenating the eye area and helping our patients look younger and well-rested.

During an upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Heidari will try to hide the incision within the natural fold of the upper eyelid, extending slightly beyond the outer corner into the laugh lines or existing creases. Since this incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, it is usually undetectable.

Lower blepharoplasty addresses puffy under-eye bags, loose skin, and hanging tissue in the lower eyelid area. Many patients utilize this procedure because they no longer want to look exhausted. Similar to upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Heidari hides the incisions made during lower eyelid surgery in natural crease lines just below the lower lashes. If it’s only fat being removed and not the skin, an incision can be placed just inside the lower eyelid, eliminating the need for any external incisions. Many patients combine their lower blepharoplasty with laser treatment or dermabrasion to achieve a tighter and smoother appearance in the lower eyelid skin.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

Aesthetic Contours

Dr. Heidari performs eyelid surgery under general or local anesthesia. If done under local anesthesia, he will numb the area around your eyes, along with giving you a mild oral or IV sedative. During eyelid surgery, Dr. Heidari will make an incision following the natural lines of your eye, then remove fat deposits, tighten muscles and remove excess skin. This technique limits the skin removal when indicated, therefore decreasing risks of eyeball exposure and dryness that sometimes occur after the traditional eyelid surgery.

Time of Surgery: The surgery takes one to two hours.

After surgery, you will feel tightness in your eyelids. A cold compress and elevating the head will help keep the swelling and bruising down. For the first few weeks following the procedure, you may experience excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and temporary changes in your vision such as blurring or double vision. Bruising lasts one to two weeks depending on your skin type. Stitches will be removed four to six days after your surgery.

Following surgery, some patients may have difficulty closing their eyes when they sleep for a few days. Adhering to Dr. Heidari’s advice on pre-and post-op care will greatly reduce the risk of complications. If for some reason you experience a complication, Dr. Heidari and the staff at Aesthetic Contours are here to help correct it and care for you every step of the way.
